Moomin Hakata Dolls I first became interested in Moomin's three-dimensional sculptures when I visited the Moominvalley Museum in Finland. There, there was a five-story blue Moomin House three-dimensional sculpture created by the creator Tove Jansson and her friend Tuutikki Pietilä. The Moomin family and friends in the house were depicted in minute detail and looked very lifelike. To faithfully recreate Moomin, I chose to make Hakata dolls.
Hakata dolls are said to be the most expressive in the world. The works created by a single doll maker, from free-form molding, to detailed carving and coloring, are of high quality. The "Moomin Hakata Dolls" were born from an encounter between the doll maker and High Tide, a local Fukuoka company.

The origin of Hakata dollsHakata dolls have been cultivated over a long history.
Hakata dolls have a long history, and when Kuroda Nagamasa entered Chikuzen in 1600, many craftsmen were gathered there, and it is said that these craftsmen created unglazed dolls, which laid the foundations for today's traditional crafts. In the latter half of the Edo period, master craftsmen such as Masaki Soshichi (Soushichi ware), Nakanoko Yoshibei, and Shiromizu Buhei were active.
In the Meiji period, realistic designs were adopted and they received high praise at international expositions such as those in Paris. They became known as "Hakata dolls" as a representative Japanese art and craft, and in 1976 they were designated a traditional craft of Japan.
