What is "Moomin Day"?
August 9th, the birthday of Tove Jansson, the original author of the Moomin stories, was designated as "Moomin Day" and this year marks its 19th anniversary. In 2022, it will be registered as a "commemorative day" by the Japan Anniversary Association.
Tove Jansson was born in 1914 in Helsinki, the capital of Finland, as the daughter of a sculptor and a commercial painter. She learned to draw from an early age and eventually became a painter and illustrator. She was also blessed with a talent for writing stories, and in 1945 she published the first Moomin novel, "The Little Troll and the Great Flood," introducing "Moomins" to the world.
The theme for 2024 is "Respect for Nature."
Nature is an important element in the Moomin stories. Adventures with friends, snowy winter scenery, and life on an island away from Moomin Valley. When you read the stories, you can see that the Moomins live in harmony with nature through the many descriptions of nature.
The main visual for 2024 is based on green and depicts "Moomins and nature."
